Air Quality Management Areas
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council have declared three Air Quality Management Areas within the Borough where air pollution levels for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are predicted to exceed that allowed by central government by 2005. These are:
- The Town Centre including Smithfield Road, Frankwell Island and English Bridge gyratory
- Heathgates Island
- Part of the A49 through Bayston Hill between Sharpstones Lane and Burgs Lane
The air pollution is caused by traffic in all three areas.
The declaration orders came into effect on 1st May 2003 and then 1st March 2006 for the area encompassing most of the town centre. SABC has prepared a fully detailed Air Quality Action Plan in consultation with a wide range of groups to reduce the air pollution in these areas. The final draft action plan is available below:
The first stage of this process was to examine the cause of the problem in detail. An analysis of traffic flows, volume, type and future predictions was required in order to understand the nature of the problem and the consequences of some of the options for improvement that would later be considered. This analysis of traffic patterns in the vicinity of these three areas is available by reading the section entitled 'Traffic Patterns'.
The second stage was to determine what is planned for the future in these areas, or neighbouring areas where traffic is likely to use these routes, and to discuss the implications of future developments in these areas. To achieve this objective, two meetings were held during May and June 2003 with internal and external stakeholders. The information gathered from those meetings can now be added to the traffic information to allow a complete picture to be in place. To find out the information gathered from these stakeholder meetings read the section entitled 'Stakeholder Meetings'.
