Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury on the 12th of February 1809.
In 2009, around the world there will be dual celebrations to mark:
- The 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth
- The 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species
The Birthplace
As the bicentenary approaches, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council is actively assisting with negotiations to secure the freehold of the former Darwin family home at The Mount.
The intention is to persuade central government (the freeholders) to gift the property to the town.
External bodies will fund securing the lease along with the restoration and development of the ground floor into a Darwin visitor centre.
The project will be managed by the Darwin Birthplace Society
