Weeping Cross Nursery
After 60 years of operating at the New Street Site, the plant nursery has finally closed and its gates have been locked for the last time.
Since 15 January 2007 the workforce have been working at their new home - the new £400,000 glasshouse replacement at Weeping Cross Depot.
It was the end of an era as staff and officials waved an emotional goodbye to the the nursery, which has been used by the Shrewsbury Corporation and subsequently by the borough council for plant production since 1946.
During Percy Thrower's early television career the site was also often used for filming his gardening programmes.
But the new glasshouse will be capable of producing more than 280,000 plants and will provide a state-of-the-art facility.
Stan Sedman, chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom, said it was always sad when a popular and familiar workplace was closed but said it was clean New Street had come to the end of its life.
The new nursery will give much more scope for production and by its nature will be less labour intensified with automatic systems for control of the growing environment.
Councillor Judith Williams, portfolio holder for Britain in Bloom, said "A lot of nostaliga surrounds the New Street location. However I am proud to witness the development of the new facility, which demonstrates the council's commitment to contribute to our Town of Flowers and our entry into the prestigious Entente Florale competition in 2007.
The nursery holds open days and visits for interested parties and groups. For more information about the nursery please contact Chris Watkins, Horticultural Services Supervisor at:
