Disability Equality Scheme

The Disability Duty came into force in December 2006 and relates to The Disability Discrimination Act of 2005, which places a statutory General Duty on all public authorities to promote disability equality.

This means that public authorities must, in carrying out all functions, have due regard to the need to:

  • Promote equality of opportunity between disabled persons and other persons
  • Eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the Disability Discrimination Act
  • Eliminate harassment of disabled persons that is related to their disability
  • Promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons
  • Encourage participation by disabled person in public life;and
Take steps to take account of disabled persons' needs, even if this requires more  favourable treatment.
