8. Fitting into the Strategic Framework

The strategic context against which these proposals should be considered is set out in the Community Strategy and the Corporate Plan. The Community Strategy identifies a range of objectives for Tourism under the economic wellbeing theme. Priority actions are for the development of a brand image for Shrewsbury and the development of a co-ordinated strategy for marketing Shrewsbury to visitors.
 
The Community Strategy recognises that the future of the Music Hall and the development of an entertainment centre are amongst a series of controversial issues where further debate is required. This report and the action proposed are intended to inform that debate.
 
The Corporate Plan reflects the aspirations of the Community Strategy and indicates the Council’s wish to develop and encourage Tourism. At Policy CP803 the plan recognises the importance of culture in attracting visitors.
 
A Town Centre Strategy is currently being prepared in partnership with the Town Centre Management Partnership and the approach being recommended in this report will inform the development of that strategy placing the town’s future role as a significant cultural and tourism destination firmly at its heart.
