Electoral Registration
The Register of Electors
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council compile and publish an annual REGISTER OF ELECTORS and process applications for inclusion in the Register. You are by law required to complete a Canvass Form so that your details can be kept up to date on the Electoral Register.
Two versions of the Register are produced:
Full Register
Lists the name and address of everyone who is registered to vote and is updated every month. You do not have a choice about your details being on this Register. Anyone can look at it, but copies can only be supplied for certain purposes. The main use of the Full Register is to show who can vote in elections and referendums. Credit reference agencies can use it, but only to check your name and address if you are applying for credit. It can also be used for law enforcement.
Edited Register
Is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. You can choose NOT to be on the Edited Register, which is kept separate from the Full Register. The Edited Register can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.
Inspecting the Register
The Edited Register and Monthly Updates to the Register are available for inspection in the Main Reception at both the Shirehall and the Guildhall in Shrewsbury.
The Full Register is also available for inspection on request, and may be inspected under supervision.
Please remember ...
- If you are a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union Citizen, you need to be on the Electoral Register to be able to vote.
- You MUST register every year. You are NOT automatically registered, even if you pay Council Tax.
- If you want to restrict who has access to your name and address on the Electoral Register, you must tell the Electoral Registration Officer that you want to "opt out".
- If you move house, you can register at your new address at any time of the year - don't just wait for the next canvass to take place.
- If you're living away from home (eg. as a student), you can register at more than one address, but you can only vote ONCE in any single election.
Application Forms to register are available direct from the Electoral Services Office (Tel. 01743 - 251000) or via this link:- http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
