The Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre
The Centre is the sole public swimming facility in Shrewsbury occupying a superb town centre location on the perimeter of the Quarry, and consists of four indoor Swimming Pools, one outdoor Paddling Pool, Fitness and Relaxation Suite and Aerobics/Dance Studio, together with associated service areas. The Centre contains the 140 cover Waterside Restaurant which is managed on behalf of the Council by Customised Catering, a subsidiary of the Granada Group.
The main Quarry Pool is situated on the first floor and contains a 51 metre flume ride, three diving boards, moveable bulkhead, electronic timing facilities and galleried spectator accommodation for 216 persons located on the second floor. Also situated on the first floor is the Gymnasium, by which the Relaxation Suite is accessed which includes 8 person spa bath, 8 person steamroom, 5 person sauna, showers and communal area complete with loungers and air conditioning.
The ground floor contains the three smaller Priory, Claremont and Teaching Pools, their changing facilities and the Solarium Suite.
Also available is a Child Supervision Service where all pre-school aged children including the very young are welcome.
London Road Sports Centre
London Road Sports Centre is a dual use facility currently provided in partnership between Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology. Access to facilities is therefore shared with the Borough Council providing for general public access throughout evenings, weekends and College holiday periods.
Its facilities include a four-court multi-purpose sports hall, two-court sports hall, three-court floodlit outdoor multi-sport area and outdoor pitches.
The Centre attracts in the region of 47,000 general public attendances per annum.
Grange Sports Centre
The Grange Sports Centre is a dual use facility provided in partnership between Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Shropshire County Council and the Grange School.
All facilities are based on the campus of the Grange School and include a four-court multi-purpose sports hall, multi-purpose gymnasium, two-court sports hall, outdoor multi-sport area and informal access to outdoor pitches.
The Centre attracts in the region of 27,000 general public attendances per annum.
Roman Road Sports Centre
Roman Road Sports Centre is a dual use facility provided in partnership between Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Shropshire County Council and Meole Brace School. Facilities consist of a three-court multi-purpose sports hall, floodlit full-size synthetic pitch, four-court multi-sport area and informal access to outdoor pitches. All facilities, with the exception of the four-court multi-sport area (Priory School), are based on the campus of Meole Brace School.
The Centre attracts in the region of 45,000 general public attendances per annum.
Monkmoor Recreation Centre
Monkmoor Recreation Centre is a facility solely owned and administered by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council. Facilities consist of six tarmac tennis courts, a multi-sports area, floodlit synthetic pitch, two croquet lawns, a bowling green, two senior and one junior football pitches, a skateboard and BMX park (managed under licence), a childrens play area and a kick-about area. The Centre attracts in the region of 18,000 attendances per annum.
Leisure Management of Recreation Grounds
Promotion, management and Co-ordination of Sporting and formal Leisure ctivity across twenty-two recreation grounds. Activities include football, cricket, rugby, bowls croquet, tennis amongst others.
Activities extend to promotion of special events such as the Disabled Cricketers' Tournament, Kite and Boomerang Festival, Fairgrounds and Circus accommodation.
Facilities provided include multi-sports courts, hard tennis courts and a skateboard park.
Formal sporting access to recreation grounds attracts over 22,000.
Delivery at local level of National Development initiatives
- COMMUNITY TOPS - To increase the quality and quantity of extra curricular Sport within primary schools.
- ACTIVE SPORTS - Designed to increase the sporting standards of secondary school children, increase the number of children attending local sports clubs and improve quality of coaching provision.
- ANNUAL YOUTH GAMES - To enable children below County representative standard to participate in a County wide sporting spectacular.
The above are supported by local initiatives such as provision of coaching sessions within a wide variety of sports, development of local coaching expertise and general assistance in sports club development.
The Council's Sports Development Officer also provides support by advising local sports clubs of external funding opportunities and activity assisting I the compilation of numerous grant aid applications.
