Quarry Play Park Survey

New Quarry Play Park
The new play area in The Quarry, Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, with Support from the National Lottery and Shropshire Horticulture Society are proposing to redesign the children's play area and outdoor paddling pool in the Quarry Park.  The Council has secured £220,000 for the project and wants to make sure that what is provided meets the play needs of both children and parents.

Whilst the scope of the redevelopment is quite broad some constraints do apply.

  • The play area and pool area have to remain in the same location and occupy the same area
  • The bottom area of the park has to remain grassed
  • The play area is for younger children
  • The play area needs to be in keeping with its setting within a traditional formal parkland
  • The building used as a Pool Changing room has to remain
  • Only low level fencing can be installed
  • All installations need to comply with current health and safety requirements

Apart from these constraints and within budget and engineering limits the redevelopment is a free hand.

Why did we need the data?

Funding became available to up-date and refurbish the children's play area, picnic area and paddling pool in the Quarry Park.

We needed to consult people who use the park.  We asked for their thoughts on the park, as it is now, and what improvements they would like to see.  We showed examples of new play equipment and asked them to make a 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice on each item.

----------------------------------------

Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council scheme for the children's playground was completed by July 2003 and has proved a great success.

The paddling pool and link to the play area needed to be treated as a separate phase, consequent upon resolution of the underground infrastructure issues.  These indicated a need for a new water circulation system and this was installed in spring 2004, to allow the paddling pool to be used for the summer season, whilst at the same time tenders were sought for the refurbishment of the pool surround and its link to the play area for construction this winter.  Pending the receipt of satisfactory tenders this work will start on schedule.
