We also carry out monitoring for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). Monitoring is carried out using passive diffusion tubes as part of a national network. The small plastic diffusion tubes absorb Nitrogen Dioxide present in the air and are subsequently sent off for analysis under laboratory conditions.
Results are collated on a monthly basis and the values used to calculate annual average levels.
The main source of Nitrogen Dioxide is traffic and the pollutant has been linked with various health effects in humans including altered lung function, increased incidence of acute respiratory illness and increased susceptibility to infection.
There are currently 62 diffusion tubes located at specific sites within the Borough to measure the amount of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the air.
Each tube has an open and closed end. The open end allows air to flow inside and is positioned in a downward direction to prevent any accumulation of rain, dust or other contaminants being collected. The closed end of the diffusion tube is covered with a small metal mesh which traps the pollutant (NO2) until it is analysed later in the laboratory.
Every month each diffusion tube is sealed and collected ready for analysis at the laboratory, and then replaced with a new diffusion tube for the next month.
