Questions
Why have I got ants in my kitchen, and how do I control them?
The ants in your kitchen have come from a nest in the fabric of the building very near to some form of heat, either a boiler or central heating pipes. As there is no natural source of food outside they are looking in your kitchen. You will need an insecticide spray or powder of the residual type. Lay a band of spray or powder onto the floor where they are emerging and as they crawl over it they will pick it up on their feet and it will destroy them. Don't forget to read the instructions on the container before you use it.
I am finding one or two beetles on my window ledge in the bedroom. They are blue-yellow mottled about 3mm long and shaped similar to a lady bird. Should I need to be concerned?
The beetle you describe is a carpet beetle and at this time of the year is attracted to the light as it wants to get outside. In its larval stage (Woolly Bear) it has been feeding on natural fibres i.e. woollen carpets - woollen sweaters, silk shirts or cotton dresses - anything of a natural fibre origin. The adult does no damage whatsoever and is actually a vegetation insect during the summer months. As the end of the summer draws near the adult will gain access to your house, find a source of natural fibres for her babies to feed on, lay her eggs and disappear. Going through your woollens etc in the autumn and a good vacuuming of the carpet will usually solve the problem although large infestation may be treated with a recommended insecticide available from most hardware or do it yourself stores.
When vacuuming pay attention to the out of the way places, under chests of drawers etc.
