River Severn
The river Severn enters the borough near Alberbury in the West, and leaves at Buildwas in the East. It takes a meandering route, the length along the river is 70km (almost 44 miles) is more than double the direct distance of 34km (21 miles).
The town centre of Shrewsbury is located in a loop of the river Severn. The loop almost makes the town into an island, in the past this has served as a defence. Recently the defensive role of the river has been superseded by recreational uses, including rowing and river cruising.

While the river is a wonderful sport and leisure resource, it can also be dangerous.
As with all watersports, you must take care when using it - ensure that you have been properly trained in water safety and proper use of your equipment.
The downside of having a major river in the town centre, is occasional flooding, a major project is in progress to build flood defences along the river.
