Volunteer Information

Volunteers play a vital part in helping the Countryside Unit bring about its joint objectives of conserving the rich variety of wildlife and countryside in and around Shrewsbury and providing greater opportunities for people to enjoy and appreciate the countryside through quiet recreation.

The information below answers some commonly asked questions about volunteering for the Countryside Unit.

What would I be doing as a volunteer for the Countryside Unit?

There is a range of tasks which volunteers can become involved in:
  • Practical habitat and site management work at Countryside Heritage Sites, Community Woodlands and other sites, including path clearance, tree planting, way marking, hay making, building fences, stiles, gates and some litter removal.
  • Office based tasks including answering the telephone, taking messages, filing and word processing.
  • Assisting with the organisation and running of guided walks and other events for the public, schools and other groups.

When would I be volunteering?

Practical tasks take place most days during the week (Monday to Friday). You can join us for just one day or as many as you like. The office is open Monday to Friday. Volunteers can help us here at most times, whether for a couple of hours each week or for longer periods. Events usually take place at weekends and occasionally in the evenings.

What would I need to bring with me?

For practical tasks you will need to wear old clothes and good boots. Steel toe capped boots are best if you have them. The Unit has some waterproofs and wellies for volunteers to use if you do not have any of your own. We can also provide work gloves. Bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink as we stay on site all day. An up to date tetanus vaccination is essential to protect against possible infection from cuts.

Do I need any previous experience to volunteer?

No. Training in the practical skills and the safe working procedures required on site will be provided by the Field Officer. If you do have experience or skills in other areas, such as plant or animal survey, drawing, design ....... and would like to volunteer, please contact us as we have many different projects that would benefit from the help of volunteers.
