Shrewsbury Sports Village

Release Date: 30/06/2008

Shrewsbury Sports Village is developing into a major success story for Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and is establishing itself as the leading sports facility in the area.  Latest figures show that over 300,000 people have used the facility since recording began in April 2006.

Alan Wallin, Leisure and Community Development Manager, said in consultation with grant aid bodies "We set ourselves a target of 308,000 participants by March 2009 and we have met this target a full nine months early.  This is great news for the Council and for the people of the Borough, who are enjoying a variety of sports in a first class facility".

The development of the Sports Village has not been without problems, with delays in its completion due to construction over one particularly dry and a following exceptionally wet summer.

The Borough Council is holding a private meeting on Monday night to consider the project, including how to resolve any outstanding issues and the lessons learnt.

Councillor Charles Armstrong, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure and Capital Projects, said:  "Some mistakes were made in the development of this project.  It is important that Councillors understand what has happened and how we have learnt from those mistakes.  We must not however beat ourselves up for delivering a fantastic facility that clearly is promoting opportunities for many people of all ages and ability to enjoy sport and fitness".
