Shrewsbury Leisure Offers Tri Golf Coaching

Release Date: 08/09/2008

Shrewsbury Leisure has recently offered schools in Shrewsbury the opportunity to take part in Tri Golf Coaching, 5 schools took up the offer to take part in the pilot scheme, schools that participated were St Giles, St Marys, Worthen, Oakland and long Meadow.

Shrewsbury Leisure provided all the equipment and coaching staff, this opportunity was only possible after Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough council made money available to try and encourage greater participation in golf by juniors. The coaching was offered to the schools for 5 weeks, in the 6th week all the participating schools were invited to take part in a festival at Meole Brace Municipal Golf Course so they could put there new found skills into practise in a competitive environment.

A golf marketing and promotion group was set up to look at increasing participation at Meole Brace Municipal Golf Course, this group was made up of council officers, councillors and people with a vested interest in increasing participation in golf. One of the main areas they identified was trying to increase the number of junior golfers.

The group wrote to local primary and secondary schools to see if they would be interested in taking part in golf coaching, as a result of these letters we set about piloting a tri golf coaching course.

Sean McCarthy sports development manager for SABC said

“It was fantastic to see children having the opportunity to take part in a sport that they would not normally have the opportunity to do so. All of the children enjoyed the coaching weeks and the festival, the winning school at the festival was St Giles. Due to the success of our pilot scheme we have run a summer holiday tri golf course and are planning to run more coaching sessions in September.”

“Due to the activities we have provided we have seen an increase in the amount of junior golfers participating compared with this time last year.”
