Sports Village Reaches A Further Milestone

Release Date: 06/10/2008

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council’s, flagship sports venue, the Shrewsbury Sports Village reached yet another milestone in its brief history.

Since opening in April 2006 the number of users (not including spectators) went past three hundred and fifty thousand. In fact 353,489 have visited and played or taken part in an activity up to Sunday 28 September 2008.

The village continues to attract top class sporting teams and events having played host once again to the Shrewsbury International Soccer Festival, it has also had visits from the Spanish Ladies Football Team and the England U19’s soccer squad.

Later this year the National Wheelchair Basketball squads will be visiting the centre for a training camp.

The Shrewsbury Indoor Bowls Centre an integral part of the village will host the British Isles Short Mat Bowls Championship and the England National Squad in their run up to the Championships. It is also hoped that future internationals will be held at the centre in the near future.

The village also celebrated being included in the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOGOG), Olympic Training Camp Guide for the sports of Badminton and Basketball.

The village provides many clubs, schools, colleges and members of the local community with top class facilities in a friendly, sociable environment.

The village has not only been used for sporting activities, it has hosted religious festivals, TV shows, workshops, seminars and has excellent facilities as a training venue.

Part funded by Sport England and the Football Foundation the village reached the participation figures related to that funding a full eight months ahead of schedule.

If you have not visited the Sports Village why not come along and try one of the many activities, for either informal pay and play or a more structured coaching session by one of our many top class coaches.
