Young  Darwin’s School Days

Presented by
Shrewsbury  Heritage  Celebrations

Release Date: 11/09/2008

The Young Charles Darwin may be seen arriving for his first day at Shrewsbury School THIS SATURDAY September 13!  Shrewsbury Heritage Celebrations begins its contribution to the Darwin Bicentenary Celebrations with a 10-minute reenactment of the moment in 1818 when the nine-years-old Charles Darwin left the bosom of his family to join his older brother at Dr Butler’s boarding school at Castle Gates (now the Library).

10 year-old Alex Needham plays the young Charles, while Allan Price plays the formidable Dr Butler.  Other boys, their parents, servants and passers-by will conjure up the sights and sounds of Regency Shrewsbury.

Performances begin at 11.30, 1.15 and 3.15 on Saturday September 13 in front of Shrewsbury Library.  Anyone is welcome to watch without charge or booking.

The event is a contribution to Heritage Open Days.  The Tourist Information Centre is organising Walking Tours of the town centre, exploring sites connected with Charles Darwin and his family.  The tour takes approximately 90 minutes, concluding with A Glimpse of the Young Darwin at the Library.  Booking is essential for the Walking Tours – phone 10743 281200.
