What is Commercial Waste?

Why do I have to pay for Commercial Waste to be collected?

Commercial waste is treated differently to Household Waste and a charge can be levied for it's collection and disposal.  Business Rates (NNDR) are levied on the rateable value of the property and have no relevance to the provision of services, such as waste disposal.

SABC offer a commercial waste collection service in competition to many other waste contractors within the area.

What do I do if my collection is missed?

Call our customer services team to report the event on 01743 281155

How can I check my collection day?

Call our customer services team to ask the question on 01743 281155

I need an additional collection, how do I order one and how much will it cost?

Call our Commercial Waste Department on 01743 281158 or email commercialwastebins@shrewsbury.gov.uk

The cost may depend on the nature of the collection. We can quote you before undertaking the extra service.

Will you collect side/excess commercial waste?

No, not unless a specific order has been raised, or you use the pre-paid Green Trade Sacks to hold the extra waste.

Black bin bags will not be collected, and you could risk prosecution if you try to pass off commercial waste as normal household waste.

Your bulk wheelie bin has a charge consistent with it's size and frequency of emptying. If you generate side/excess waste, this container may have to be added to or the frequency adjusted.

Call the Commercial Waste Section on 01743 281158 or email commercialwastebins@shrewsbury.gov.uk for advice and additional charge information.

How do I dispose of bulky trade items or one-off collections?

We can offer a collection and disposal service, as a Private Works Order.

Call our customer services on 01743 281155 or email commercialwastebins@shrewsbury.gov.uk for advice and additional charge information.

Can I dispose of commercial waste myself?

You can dispose of your own waste if you register as a Waste Carrier with The Environment Agency.  You may then transport your own waste to a licensed commercial waste disposal or handling facility.  There may be a charge levied for the registration and a cost for the disposal on delivery.

Do registered charities have to pay for commercial waste?

Yes. Although waste generated from premises occupied by a charity can be classified as Household Waste, unless they are exempt from business rates a reasonable charge can be recovered for the collection of their waste.

Someone else is putting waste in my bin. What can I do?

This may be as a result of a fly tipping incident or due to an act of ignorance. Either way, it may be an unauthorised deposition of waste and could be deemed illegal.  It would be advisable to report it to the Commercial Waste Officer at SABC to investigate the allegation. Note down any information you can in order to help, such as the location of the fly tip, and the type of waste, the source (if known) or vehicle registration (if seen).

My bin has been stolen, what should I do?

If you believe it is stolen, please report the incident to the Police, then to SABC.  We will organise the delivery of a replacement container.  Please note, you are liable for the safe-keeping of any container provided by the Council, so you could be charged for the cost of the lost container. Please check your own company or site insurance for advice on any potential claim.
