Existing Facilities
| The site for the proposed Sports Village is the existing 29 hectare site known as the 'Sundorne Recreation Ground', Sundorne Road, Shrewsbury. Currently this comprises a large open area mainly laid to turf providing a number of football pitches although part of the site is separated from the rest by a hedgerow in the South East corner of the site. In addition, on the North of the site there is an area of tarmac providing parking for around 100 cars as well as some existing tennis courts, a former squash court building now used as a Martial Arts Centre, a groundsman's house, a site workshop /storage compound, a store area for Council conservation materials as well as an existing changing block serving the pitches. |
Links and Adjoining Land
To the North of the site is the Sundorne Road from which the site vehicular access is taken. To the north of this is a developed residential area. Adjacent to the Martial Arts Centre is a small area of land owned by Shropshire County Council used as a Youth Centre and Pupil Referral Unit. There are gaps in the boundary at certain points, which allow pedestrian links to the site from the road.
To the East is a small lane forming a private access to a small number of houses to the South east of the site, a new Tennis Centre to the Northeast and an area of fields between the site and the A49 to the East.
To the South of the site is an area of woodland and beyond this the former Shropshire Canal (still visible in some sections). There are links from the site to the towpath, which is now used as a footpath and Cycle track. Beyond the path is an area of fields between the canal and the river Severn.
To the West is an area of fields, a Territorial Army Centre and some residential development beyond.
Boundaries
|
To the North of the site, the boundary is predominantly a large managed hedgerow incorporating some large trees in some sections. To the East there is also a hedgerow and trees but this is less uniform and provides less screening. To the South is an area of established woodland adjacent to the canal. In the southeast corner is an area of more recently planted woodland designated as community woodland. The West of the site is also bounded by a hedgerow and trees but this provided better screening than the Eastern boundary. |
Topography and Soil Conditions
The site is gently sloping from the North to the South by approximately 5 metres. The underlying soil conditions are clay. Currently the pitches are not sufficiently flat to meet ecommended standards and the ground conditions often waterlogged during the winter.
Topsoil thicknesses vary and historically the poor conditions have resulted in many pitches being unsuitable for use during much of the season.
Vehicular Access and Parking
This is from the Sundorne Road and takes the form of a 'T' junction. At present the radii are unsuitable for large vehicles and the visibility splays are poor. Parking provision is low, with spaces for around 100 cars. The provision for weekend peak use is currently inadequate for the 450 vehicles, which currently enter and leave the site on Saturdays and Sundays.
