Shropshire Council Housing Strategy 2009 - 2011
We are delighted to be able to introduce the inaugural Shropshire Council Housing Strategy for 2009 – 2011, "Foundations for our Future". This milestone strategy communicates a new sense of identity, confidence and purpose about the new Council and the communities it represents. For the first time, it recognises and seeks to address the fundamental housing challenges that we face in trying to achieve balanced and sustainable communities within Shropshire.
We want this strategy to reflect the views and suggestions of our partners, stakeholders and the members of the public and so you have the opportunity to comment on the strategy until October 3rd 2008. Appendix 8 is a feedback form which has details about how to make your comments to us.
This is a period of great challenge for us, as the pressures on housing within our communities have never been more acute, but it is also a period of great opportunity, as together we are now stronger, more focussed and able to represent and communicate the needs of our communities at sub regional, regional and national levels.
This strategy along with our many partners from all sectors of the community will:
- Provides direction for housing services throughout the authority in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
- Addresses a wide range of housing issues from planning policies which will deliver affordable housing, to how we provide support for vulnerable people.
- Supports and contributes to the aims of the ‘Shropshire Community Strategy’ and ‘Corporate Plan’ as well as linking to sub-regional, regional and national strategies, policies and priorities.
- Addresses these main themes with equal priority:
- Housing provision and affordability.
- Decent Homes in the private and social sector.
- Vulnerable households.
- Gypsies and Travellers.
- Homelessness.
- Housing services and the social rented sector.
- Housing Options and Allocations
Contains an Action Plan, setting out what we are going to do to deliver our priorities, with details of targets, likely resources and expected time-scales. It will also demonstrate links to other strategies and policies.
Overall, the strategy will be a working document with an action plan which will be updated regularly to reflect progress with delivering the priorities and to take account of changes in legislation or policy at national regional, sub regional levels, but reflect changes at a local level.
The new strategy is very challenging and given the support of partners and availability of resources we can look forward to meeting our aspirations of improving the quality and availability of housing for people of all ages, whatever their needs across the Shropshire Council.
