Shrewsbury Town Centre Conservation Area was designated in May 1970 in response to the Civic Amenities Act 1967. The  Conservation Area is divided into ten distinctive areas. The central Conservation Area was extended in 1981 to include several new areas such as Abbey Foregate, Frankwell and Mountfields.

"Frankwell" is characterised by its "sweeping curves of the street and also from the wealth of the 16th Century buildings dispersed throughout its length" (1969 - The Challenge of Conservation).

"Mountfields" is bounded by "Frankwell" to the west and and a square-shaped loop of the River Severn to the east, and adjoins a further Conservation Area on its north-westerly side known as "The Mount". The Mountfields Conservation Area was re-appraised in 2006.

The following documents contain full appraisals of the Frankwell Conservation Area and The Mountfields Conservation Area.  The purpose of these documents is to identify those parts of the Conservation Areas that should be preserved and enhanced. It also contains proposals for improvement.
