Good Practice Guide for Computer Users
The Council is committed to using information technology and computer systems in a secure, efficient and legitimate manner. It fully supports compliance with the Data Protection Acts (1984 and 1998), and other legislation relating to the use of computers.
Introduction
The Council has a large investment in the use of Information Technology (IT) which is used to benefit the working practices of all services. It is essential therefore that all information-processing systems within the authority are protected to an adequate level from disruption or loss of service, whether through accident or deliberate damage.
To ensure the integrity and confidentiality of its computer systems, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council has an IT Security Policy, and an Email/Internet Policy which have been produced in line with the British Standard for Information Security (BS7799). The purpose of the policies are to provide a set of rules, measures and procedures that determine the Council’s commitment to ensuring that its I.T. resources are protected from physical and logical risk.
The policies are relevant to all I.T. services, irrespective of the equipment in use, or location, and applies to:
- All Councillors, employees and agents;
- Employees and agents of other organisations who directly or indirectly support or use the Council’s Computer Services;
- Copies of the Policy are available via the Council’s Intranet site or can be obtained from Computer Services.
This guidance booklet gives users of IT instruction on good practices to follow when using computer technology. Whilst you are obliged to comply with the Security and Email/Internet policies, the objective of this guide is to advocate ‘good practice’.
It is important that users read this booklet in conjunction with the ‘Security Policy’ documents.
The ‘guide’ recommends that you follow the instructions to ensure that IT equipment and data is used effectively and securely.
