Guidance on the Comfortable use of Laptop Computers

Purpose of Document

This document provides users with practical advice for using laptop computers. The document is not intended to be a definitive health and hafety guide.

Guidance

Laptop computers are designed primarily for portability and mobility.

They provide the full range of functionality that is available on regular desktop computers, but there is less flexibility in terms of adjustment of screen and keyboard position.

It is therefore important to be aware of ergonomic issues in order to maintain your comfort whilst using them.
  • Place the computer on a desk or other suitable work surface.
  • Place the computer so that it is directly in front of you when you work and that you have adequate space to operate other devices.
  • Use a suitable seat that enables you to keep your back straight, preferably a fully adjustable office-type chair. Adjust your chair so that the keyboard is at or slightly below the level of your elbow.
  • Do not use the computer with it on your knees, this will make it impossible to obtain a good posture.
  • Leave adequate space behind the computer so that you can freely adjust the angle of the screen panel.
  • Aim to have your knees, hips and elbows making 90 degree angles.
You should observe general health and safety good practice when operating and transporting your equipment, for example:
  • Avoid using the equipment in dusty, dirty or damp environments.
  • When picking up the computer, avoid 'reach and lift'.
  • Pick a comfortable location where there will not be reflections on the screen or bright lighting behind the screen.
  • Take regular short breaks, for example 2 or 3 minutes every half hour.
The computer is a delicate piece of equipment, you should:
  • Always ensure the cooling fan outlet is clear to avoid overheating.
  • Never operate the computer inside its carrying case - it will overheat.
  • Transport the computer in its case and avoid treating it roughly.
  • Avoid operating the computer near strong magnetic fields and electrical interference such as hi-fi speakers and mobile phones.
