Information Security - Bulletin 1

July 2004

Introduction

Over recent months there has been a considerable increase in the amount of e-mail and internet traffic in and out of the Council. At the same time there has also been an increase in the volume and type of threat posed by virus attack. To ensure the continued security and confidentiality of its computer systems, the Council has put in place stringent and comprehensive security procedures. However, on their own, these procedures are not enough. It is essential that staff and councillors also play their part by ensuring that they take responsibility for adhering to policy and applying good practice at all times.

The purpose of the attached bulletin is to remind Staff and Councillors of the need to adhere to the Council’s Security Policies and Good Practice Guides. Members of staff are reminded that they have a duty to adhere to these policies as they form part of their conditions of service. It is YOUR responsibility to adhere to policy. Policy information is important and you should acquaint yourselves with it.

Any serious breach of the policies may result in the individual being subjected to the Council’s disciplinary procedure or in the case of Councillors, breaches will be referred to the Council’s Standards Committee.

Any individual who suspects that the policies are being violated by another individual must report the violation immediately to his or her Manager, who, in appropriate circumstances, must report the matter to ICT Services. Please note the Council operates a ‘whistleblowing’ policy.

The attached bulletin should not be regarded as a complete summary and Staff and Councillors are reminded that they should read and comply with the policy documents that are available via the Intranet and Internet
